THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOATATION - Glastar Sunrooms by SunShade

THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOATATION

While it is nice to have the warm sunny weather, this year has been hotter than most and with very little rain. Most everyone is aware of the many fires across the country, as evidenced by the recent smoky skies.

Although the hot weather is somewhat normal, the extremely dry conditions we are experiencing, is not. On top of next to no precipitation this summer, we also had below average snowfall throughout the winter. These circumstances have contributed to some excess ground movement. Most people relate to this movement to shifting fence posts, gates not latching properly, sidewalks and driveways heaving and doors not operating properly. In some cases, the movement has been severe enough to cause substantial damages to sub-structures, buried pipes and foundations. I relate to these conditions by the movement we have seen in some of the decks and sunrooms we have built. Fortunately, we have developed a unique "floatation system” specifically, for our movement prone "gumbo", which we have been using successfully for close to 40 years.

Our sunrooms, with this built in floatation system, compensate for the ground movement, thereby eliminating damage (broken glass, cracks, twisted panels, etc.) that could occur in conventional construction methods. This becomes particularly beneficial when we experience a severe year such as this. I have had customers who have experienced movement up to 3 inches, despite the fact that they had ground screws, or piles (up to 16 inch diameter and 16 feet deep), under their existing decks. This could have caused major damage to any other construction method. The system is so effective, we can get permits to build sunrooms on a surface mount pad with small adjustable footings and/or teleposts. To our knowledge, this is the only system of its kind in North America that can make this claim.
